Understanding The Basic Kinds Of Aptitude Tests

If you are an adult and are considering continuing your education at an adult education center or a community college, then you may be asked to take a variety of aptitude tests to determine your placement in the curriculum and help you define your educational goals. There are many different types of aptitude tests, and it is important that you understand the purpose and importance of the aptitude tests that you take. 

The Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE)

The Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) is similar to a GED exam in that it tests your general knowledge. It focuses on English and math skills and takes about an hour and a half to complete. Many adult education centers offer the TABE exam either as a traditional paper exam or on a computer, which will give you instant results.

The TABE exam measures whether you have basic academic skills that are necessary to begin a more in-depth training program. If you do not do well on the TABE exam, you may be encouraged to take basic reading, writing, or math classes before you can begin studying for your actual certificate or program. 

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) was developed for military use. However, it is used by civilians across the country to help individuals explore different careers by assessing their basic aptitude in various areas. It has eight sections that test science, math, vocabulary, reading comprehension, math, electrical knowledge, auto and mechanical knowledge, and mechanical comprehension. While getting high scores on every section of the ASVAB may be flattering, what is more important is seeing which sections you have the highest scores in compared to the other sections. This will give you an idea of what areas you should continue to develop for a successful career.  

Specialty Aptitude Tests 

Specialty aptitude tests may be used before you enter a specific program. For example, you may take a logic and reasoning exam before entering a computer programming program. Doing well on these exams is important because many education centers will not allow you to enter the specific program you want to study in until you pass the required aptitude test. If you need to take a specialty aptitude test, you should consider getting a specific study guide for it and taking a practice exam before you sign up for your actual exam. 

Communications and Social Aptitude Tests 

Communications and social aptitude tests help you understand how you relate to other people. This can be useful when determining what type of career you want to go into. However, they can also be a useful tool for improving your satisfaction and performance at your current job. By understanding your social needs and strengths, you can communicate better with your colleagues and express yourself in healthy ways at work. If you score low on a communications or social aptitude test, your education center may suggest taking an emotional intelligence or business communications course to improve your skills. 

Career Aptitude Tests

Career aptitude tests tend to be surveys of your general interests and self-reported skills. They are low-pressure tests that are meant to help you choose a career path that suites your personality. They are generally quick and should not be stressful to take. You do not have to study before them and, if a counselor is with you, you can usually ask questions about any questions you do not understand.
